Business Travelers Biggest Challenge: Time Spent in Transit

Time is money, and this applies to business travelers as well. In a recent study looking to identify the main challenges business travelers face, employees stated time spent in transit as the most challenging aspect of business travel. The study, titled “Creating a Frictionless Travel Experience”, was in collaboration between the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) and Sabre, a leading Global Distribution Systems provider.

The purpose of the study was to understand the top pain points of travelers in order to find actionable solutions for organizations to make the travel experience better for their employees. By providing the right tools, resources and policies to keep them productive and satisfied while on the road, companies can increase employee retention. In fact, 79% of employees say their business travel experience impacts their overall satisfaction, with that statistic climbing up to 88% among millennials.

Rounding out the top 5 challenges travelers face are:

  1. Time spent in transit
  2. Layovers
  3. Changing a flight or train reservation mid-trip
  4. Work environment while traveling
  5. Preparing expense reports

Among other categories included were working away from the office, changing a lodging reservation during a trip, meals, pre-travel approval/ gathering travel information, travel debrief with travel department, flight/train booking experience, and lodging booking experience.  

Overall, these top pain points have one thing in common: time. This shows that efficiency is a main priority amongst business travelers, especially given that approximately 72% of business travelers are middle management or higher. This means that things like having access to a work environment where they can be productive, and spending extended amounts of time on layovers, preparing expense reports and changing reservations mid-trip are important to them.

What can a company do to mitigate these top challenges? Non-stop flights, conveniently located hotels, 24 hour customer support from your TMC, hotel high-speed internet and in-flight/train WIFI are some of the amenities companies can provide their travelers to keep them efficient and satisfied while on the road.
