Contrary to many beliefs, there is always an exception to the rule. Even the strictest rules often have a loophole: the general policy that a US Citizen is only able to possess one valid passport at any given time is now a thing of the past. But why would you need a second US passport?

The truth is, many corporate travelers just don’t have the time to obtain visas in between trips. There are even countries that will deny entry if your passport is stamped by a country they have active political conflicts with. Take off the pressure of traveling for work by having the peace of mind you deserve. As a frequent business traveler, let us guide you on how to have one less headache next time you fly.

First, consider your eligibility

You are only eligible to obtain a second passport if you already have a valid US passport that either has stamps from Israel that may deny entry to countries such as Syria and Iran or you have two international trips coming up in which the second trip requires visas.

How to apply for your second passport

The documents you will need in order to apply for a second passport include:

A second passport application form, otherwise known as form “DS-82.” This is the government mandated form you will need to complete your application. You may complete this form online by visiting, print it, and sign.

A new passport photo that is different from the photo on your primary 10-year passport.

A copy of your driver’s license or any other state-issued ID.

A second passport letter of request. This letter highlights the specific reason you need to obtain a second valid passport. The letter is addressed to the US Department of State and must be signed by you. In order to expedite the passport request process, you may want to include a formal written statement from your employer or travel management company during business travel.

You must include proof such as a flight itinerary for the travel plans that were detailed in your letter of request. A detailed itinerary can easily be produced by your corporate travel agency as well.

The last step in obtaining your second passport is to pay the fee. The check must be written out to “US Department of State” and will cost $110, or $170 if you request an expedited passport.

How long will it take?

Processing times for second passport applications:

  • Standard service by mail: 6-8 weeks
  • Expedited service by mail: 2-3 weeks
  • Expedited service at a US Passport Agency: up to 8 business days
  • Expedited service from a registered passport expediting company: as little as 24 hours
